While it isn’t necessary, knowing some extra information can’t hurt. However, don’t try to teach yourself to play violin before you take lessons- you can end up with some very bad habits that could create extra work for you and your teacher.
The best preparation is listening to lots of good players play a wide repertoire of violin music in lots of settings: orchestral, chamber (small ensemble), jazz and improvisation, fiddling, solo violin, etc.
I’m pretty sure it’s impossible to know everything about art and music.

No, if your just starting out the teacher will have a clean slate….you’ll have formed no bad habits. To know everything about music and art is almost impossible…..I’ve played and studied classical guitar, art etc, for thirty five years, and I still have things to learn. As for books and web sites there are thousands….go on google and type in this….learning the violin….and you’ll see lots of links that you can access, do the same with the type of art that your interested in. Good luck to you, I love to hear young people like yourself interested in the arts !!!!!!!!!

No, let your teacher start you off correctly so that you do not develop any bad habits.
TIP : buy an electronic tuner from the music store so that your violin is always in tune. They cost about $20.
