I moved into an apartment unit that has a locked pod door so anyone who isn’t a tenant has to buzz the apt. they are visiting to get in. I have a phone in my apt to talk to the visitor outside and a button to unlock the door when they enter. The buzzer doesn’t work. I can’t ever hear when someone buzzes to visit and it’s annoying for visitors who don’t have my cell # and can’t call me to be let in. I leave my phone on silent when I give violin lessons and several times my next student tries to call me but can’t get a hold of me and sits outside until I realize the missed call. I turned in my condition of premises form on time when I moved in and alerted the management company about the problem and they still haven’t fixed it. I called them a few days ago and asked about it again and they simply said "it was in the works to be fixed". Is there any sort of Montana law about having apt buzzers working? I don’t think they are too eager to put out so it may spur them on.

Technically, the landlord is required to maintain it.

70-24-406.(e) shall maintain in good and safe working order and condition all electrical, plumbing, sanitary, heating, ventilating, air-conditioning, and other facilities and appliances, including elevators, supplied or required to be supplied by the landlord;

Once given the written notice, he has a "resonable time" to repair it. But the law does not specify what that timeframe is. (Usually it’s 14-30 days.)

I don’t know how long you have been waiting for this repair–and although it is inconvenient, it is not a health or safety issue. You could give them another written notice (keep a copy for yourself) and notify them that if it is not repaired within 2 weeks, you will take steps to have it repaired and withhold the amount from the next month’s rent.
