I want to learn to play the violin, what does this entail?

I would like to learn to play the violin. I can read sheet music rather well due to piano and clarinet lessons. What other requirements do I need to meet? Obviously I need to purchase a violin. What should I consider when purchasing it? I know there are things such as chin rests and bridges but what else? What do I need so that I can get started?

The chin rest should already come on the violin as well as the bridge (where the strings lay). Consider getting a shoulder rest though, because it is quite uncomfortable to not have one. I also recommend letting someone put some colored tape on the violin in the most common places where your fingers will go until you get used to where your fingers are supposed to go.

chinrests usually come with the violin. you should aslo consider to put "tapes" on your fingerboard. just three would be helpful to show first, second, and third finger. it helps you know that you are in tune.. get a shoulder rest but make sure it suits you. because you cant just buy a random one. same with a violin. size matters xD.
if your a beginner i reccomend this book http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Elements-2000-Strings-Plus/dp/0634038176 it was REALLY helpful for me when i was a beginner. and make sure you practice.
it dosent have to be like 2 hours a day. just do like half an hour everyday. or more if you would like

    hope this helped.

A friend of mine told me about this free website. It offers some pretty good information on how to start with the absolute basic steps. Such as, how to hold the violin and the bow, how to stand, how to position your fingers, the different parts of a violin etc. There are lots of photo’s explaining all these things. You can also sign up for a free video course.
